Skid Steer vs Mini Excavator: Which One Do You Need?

June 22, 2026Forte Machinery Team

Both compact machines are versatile, but they are built for different jobs. Compare digging, loading, attachments and transport to choose the right one for your fleet.

Digging: mini excavator wins

For trenching, foundations, drainage and any job that requires digging below grade, a mini excavator is the clear choice. The boom reaches down and forward in ways a skid steer's loader arms cannot, and the bucket curls under for precise grading.

A skid steer can only dig with attachments like a backhoe, which are less efficient and put stress on the machine.

Loading and moving material: skid steer wins

Skid steers excel at loading trucks, backfilling, clearing debris and moving material across a site. Their high dump height and fast cycle times make them very productive for bulk handling, and they pivot in place for tight yards.

If most of your work is moving material rather than digging, a skid steer with a bucket and forks will outperform a mini excavator.

Attachments tip the balance

Skid steers offer the widest attachment ecosystem — buckets, forks, augers, brooms, snow blades, trenchers and more. A mini excavator, by contrast, focuses on digging attachments: buckets, breakers, augers and grapples.

If one machine must do many jobs, the skid steer's attachment range often wins. If deep, precise digging is the core job, choose the mini excavator.

A common-sense recommendation

Many contractors solve this by owning both: a mini excavator for digging and a skid steer for loading. If you can only buy one, match the machine to your most frequent job — digging for excavator work, material handling for loader work.
